The Bond Experience

As said in the last post, Saturday was a strange day, it was hot but a bit breezy and no sun, so what to do Sunday? Pamper treatment? Hope for sun and poolside laze? Go on trip to James Bond Island? At the time I wanted to do the James Bond thing but Shirley made it sound like it was a joint decision! Sunday morning, raining, heavy. I should have sussed problems when the minibus driver tried to rip me off for 2000bht. Then the marina, sorry pile of sticks tied together with a couple of boats tied to it. Still raining - heavy. All aboard. Surely not ALL, like 53, yes like 53 even although there was not enough seats undercover for everyone. A Taiwanese woman took up the fight but all those with seats undercover remained incredibly silent while the Taiwanese and two Scots faced the weather and put up a small defiant effort. The tour guides won but we obtained free ponchos which some passengers had spent 50 baht on. Cast off, rain, blustery wind, overloaded boat. This was now my decision, no longer a joint decision, my decision. I felt bad, we could be lying in the spa being pampered and soothed but no wind lashed and rained on the trip began.
Running out of internet time, so the rain eased the sights were pretty spectacular. We saw some amazing wildlife - a mudskippers, wild monkeys, hornbills, sea eagles, fruit bats and ................wait for it ..........a six foot long Komodo Dragon (well we think that's what it was - put plainly it was a pretty big lizard). You can see the lizard thing pretty clearly but you have to look hard at the two rock/greenery pictures to see monkeys and hornbills!
Ended with dinner at the local beach hut Tom Yam Goong - see before and after pictures of the giant tiger prawn. Oh by the way - the sun came out! See you soon!

Saturday - Yesterday

Bit of a strange day really - Dad started off with a hotel fish spa - but the fish refused! We hung about then decided to do something adventurous and got us a kayak. We paddled with great timing around the lagoons and canals - avoiding maniacs on jet skis and the local ferry - good fun! We then got a minibus to Phuket - slightly less manic than Patong beach but everybody had something they wanted to sell. Made a few selective purchases - including Mum's speed boating gear for Sunday - wait till you see what six pounds can buy in Phuket although the T shirt guy refused to haggle! Returned to hotel - had dinner - went to bed - up early for James Bond Island - now there's a story to tell!!!!

It's a Wild Life!

Today we had an adventure on the high seas. We went on a speedboat cruise around some of the small islands off Phuket. Our first stop was Phi Phi Ley where The Beach was filmed. It was incredibly beautiful but unfortunately hundreds of fellow adventurers crowded on to the narrow strip of beach along with us to admire the stalagtites, flora, turquoise seas and white sands of Maya Bay. It was back on the luxury cruiser (not) to bounce around the island to Monkey Beach. As the boat drew up to the beach we were very sceptical - monkeys - what monkeys? We took a few paces along the exceedingly narrow beach, avoiding banging heads on the outcrops of rock and found an excited group of humans snapping away at the local monkeys! What could we do - we just joined in - warily. You can see we were really at ease with them. One mummy monkey had a little baby holding on underneath - very cute. All aboard Gennaro 2 for Viking Cave - so called apparently because a painting of a Viking longboat was found on the wall inside - we didn't see it. Apparently a good place for collecting the ingredient (key) for Birds' Nest Soup. Before lunch we did some snorkeling - when I say we - I mean dad did some snorkeling and I floundered around in a dodgy life jacket - great fun! We saw loads of colourful fish. Back on board we headed for Phi Phi Don and had lunch and chatted to Swedish man. Lunch not so good so went for a walk - we were reminded starkly of the terrible disaster that struck in that area of Thailand when we saw the tsunami evacuation signs. Head for high ground is the advice but easier said than done - the island consisted of a narrow beach a bit of a plain surrounded by peoples' houses then just sheer cliffs. Last stop was an island called Kai - a small rock about 150m long surrounded by narrow beach - this was so relaxing and beautiful. Dad tempted me back into the water and I briefly stuck my face in the water to see the fish he was so excited about - they were nice! The most exciting part of the day is yet to come. Whilst lounging on the deck chairs we were altered by a bit of a commotion coming from the men that drive the boats (crew) they were moving pretty damn quick and making a bit of a noise. A glance along - was that a snake - let's investigate. We walked along to see - by the time we got there the men had calmed down and everyone was busy taking pictures of an enormous snake - which appeared more frightened than us. It slithered about for a while then disappeared under a pile of beach rubbish. Back on board we headed for home. What a wild day! We're heading out now for food!

Phuket - Check In

Hi arrived in Phuket via Air Asia (think - Far East Easy Jet) 30 minutes ahead of schedule - pretty impressive. A short drive brought us to the Dusit Thani Laguna. We are slumming it a bit here - no upgrade to executive lounge with free cocktails and canapes or free laundry service but we are sure we will cope.

We couldn't wait to get out and explore and what we found more than made up for the lack of a free minibar! The beach which is about 100m from our room is amazing - once you get over the tiny transparent ghost crabs scuttling over your feet! We stumbled upon a shack on stilts and decided we needed refreshment - we decided to stay for dinner and watch the sun go down. Dad picked out his very own Tiger prawn - just one - it was enormous! Once dinner was over we strolled back along the beach and saw the Hermit crab scuttle across the sand - it obliged us with staying still for a few seconds while we took a snap! Apologies for the moth picture - well really, apologies for dad's toe being the only handy (footy) means of giving you a true impression of the size of the thing. Did some window shopping and made plans for tomorrow. We are going to Patong Beach after a morning at the pool side - and yes - there is a shallow end! Anyway that's us up to date - hope everyone is well and the ink is coming off the dogs!!!!

You'll notice we found an alternative laundry service!
